Photographer + Designer + Author + Teacher

My name is Natalie Slater and I’m inspired to solve problems in creative and delightful ways; to be an advocate for the user experience.

I’m the daughter of a motorcycle builder and a business woman; both are entrepreneurs. One creative with his hands, the other creative with her words. Being raised in a household with both vivid right and left brains uniquely positions my outlook on the world. My mom taught me to see the big picture and not to overlook the minor details, while my dad taught me how shapes and colors influence the way people visualize and interact with things. As such, I constantly have one foot in both the analytical and visual sides of the UI/UX world.

At the age of 12, my dad equipped me with a 35mm Pentax camera and I still haven’t put it down. Taking pictures quickly became my conversation with the world. Since then, I’ve studied photography and design for 15 years, gained a Master of Fine Arts, and started my own business. I have works of art in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and a book coming out next year. I fell in love with the ability to tell  psychological stories with my camera, which lead me to passion for UI/UX design.

I have been studying the psychology of color and how the brain processes the world.

Being a full-time professional photographer is amazing, but I often felt like I wasn’t contributing to the world in an enduring way. I wanted to make a lasting impression on my community. UI/UX design began calling my name when watching my handicap mother struggle with apps or sites that were made without her in mind. In my spare time, I began to come up with solutions that would help people like my mother and it quickly turned into my passion and profession.

secret about a secret.
The more it tells you
the less you know.
